Getting the most out of your fire sprinklers

One of the most effective pieces of fire safety equipment is fire sprinklers. If they're installed and maintained properly, they should be able to react to any minor fire and put it out. To make sure your fire sprinklers are operating in top condition, you should have them inspected by a professional at least annually to make sure the water source is sufficient and that all the parts of the sprinkler system are functioning like they should. However, to make sure your fire sprinkler system is functioning properly at all times, there are a few things you can do yourself.

Visually inspect the sprinklers

The first thing you should do is to make a habit of visually examining your fire sprinklers often. You need to make sure that nothing is in the way of the sprinkler that can affect its ability to sense the heat off a fire. If the fire sprinkler has gotten paint or dirt on it, it might not be able to react as quickly as it should in case of a fire. If you find this on your sprinklers, you should wipe them off immediately. Also keep an eye out for pieces of tape or other objects that are blocking the sprinkler.

Lock the control valves

If you have children, you might also want to get a lock for the control valves to your fire sprinklers. This means only authorised people can access the control valves to turn the sprinklers off.  Sprinklers are not activated by smoke like normal fire alarms, but rather by heat from a fire, so it's hard to set them off accidentally. But if you are concerned, locking the controls can be a good idea.

Evaluate their placement

As fire safety equipment is designed by professionals, and fire sprinklers usually are placed by people who know where to put them, chances are your sprinkles are already optimally placed in your home. However, if you have redecorated or had any refurbishment done in your home, your sprinklers may no longer be in their ideal positions. Evaluate if your sprinklers target your main sources for fire hazard like kitchen supplies and fireplaces. Also make sure there are no structures or furniture underneath them that might lessen their water power by gathering all the water before it can hit other things that might be on fire. If they seem to be improperly placed, you should call a fire sprinkler installer to get their placements optimised again.
